The starting point for mountain trips is either Dodola or Adaba. From Addis Ababa you can reach Dodola by car within 5 hours and Adaba within 5 and a half hours. Dodola is 320km from the capital, passing through the Rift Valley and via Shashamene with Adaba 345km from Addis. Via Assela it is 280 and 305km to Dodola and Adaba respectively, but may take the same time, especially in the rainy season.
There are also buses serving both routes daily. The bus via Assela leaves the central bus station in Addis at Mercato Manharia at 7 a.m. and arrives at Dodola at about 2.30 p.m. and at Adaba at 3:00 p.m. There is another direct bus via Shashamene which leaves at 8 a.m. from the same bus station. Other buses leave at La Gare bus station in Addis throughout the morning for Shashamene where you change for Dodola or Adaba.
A signboard on the roadside at the entrance of Dodola town directs you to the Dodola Tour Guides Office situated in the compound of GTZ. The motel next to the Mobil petrol station provides accommodation before the trek.
For those interested in starting their mountain trip from Adaba there is
also a signboard at the entrance of Adaba town that directs you to
the Adaba Tour
Guides Office situated in the compound of the Tourist Hotel. The
hotel also provides accommodation services.
