What to bring

There is clean water and a water filter provided at the forest camps. If you would rather not eat traditional Ethiopian food such as local unleavened bread, barley porridge with butter oil, or cabbage and nettle spinach, bring your own provisions. If necessary the guide can assist you in buying foodstuffs from what is available in Dodola or Adaba. The range is somewhat limited with regard to fresh vegetables, which are also difficult to transport and conserve. Red meat is easiest to find. Chickens are not kept because of the many predators in the mountains, but sheep or goats can be slaughtered any time for an extra payment. Even if you cannot finish all the meat in one go, it can be kept for several meals because of the low temperature. The camp keepers sell beverages so you do not need to take drinks along. Tea and sugar are freely available.

To avoid sunburn a hat and sun blocker are essential. Because the weather in the mountains tends to be unpredictable a pullover, warm jacket and rainwear are also recommended. Strong shoes are important, especially during the rainy season from June to October. Foodstuffs and other personal items can be put on a packhorse where they will remain until the camp is reached.
